The President of Taiwan Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Wen-Chung Tsai, MD., PhD

Welcome to the website of the Taiwan Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (TAPMR). Founded in 1971, the TAPMR had emerged to encompass over 1,500 physician members to date. In 2025, Taiwan will enter a super-aged society, with persisted rising of the elder population. Consequently, the population affected by chronic diseases and disabilities will continue to grow, physiatrists will take on more significant roles in taking care of these individuals.

Led and coordinated by physiatrists, rehabilitation medicine is delivered in an interdisciplinary manner in which holistic medical care is provided. Rehabilitation treatment is essential for patients with neurological impairments such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or spinal cord injury, as well as those with degenerative diseases like arthritis, osteoporosis, and sarcopenia. Early intervention for those with developmental delays also served as one of the cornerstones in rehabilitation medicine.

TAPMR continues to strengthen community rehabilitation networks, linking primary rehabilitation clinics with communities. We anticipated the close participation and affinity of physiatrists to local regions, becoming the leading choice for patients with spectrum of disabilities, degenerative diseases, and sports injuries.

During the past decade, physiatrists in Taiwan have enhanced ultrasound-guided injection techniques, such as tendon, ligament, and joint injections. Interventional spine injection is a field in which we have excelled as well. Techniques such as ultrasound-guided caudal epidural injection, medial branch block, and selective nerve root block can now be performed by the trained physiatrists. Additional skills such as fiberoptic endoscopic swallowing evaluation, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) are promoted by TAPMR as well.

The TAPMR welcomes “international traveling fellows” and encourages foreign physiatrists to visit Taiwan for academic exchange. We are now organizing the 2027 Asia-Oceanian Conference of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine and welcome experts globally to Taiwan for an academic symphony in the fields of rehabilitation medicine.

Let us continue working together to strengthen the clinical skills of physiatrists, and promote evidence-based treatments, with the goals of reducing patient disability and improving public health.
