Taiwan Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation: Instructions for Submission

  • All academic papers that are related to rehabilitation medicine and which have not been published in any other academic journal are eligible for publication by the Taiwan Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (hereafter referred to as the journal).
  • The journal accepts manuscript submissions including original articles, case reports, review articles, brief communications, and letters to the editor. All manuscripts must be in compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki or the Code of Ethics of the World Medical Association. The editorial board of the Taiwan Academy of Physical Medicine Rehabilitation (hereafter referred to as the academy) reserves the right to edit or publish the manuscript.
  • The academy owns the copyrights of all content published in the journal. Reproduction of any article is restricted, unless consent has been obtained from the editorial board of the academy. The journal is published in the form of printed paper. The academy reserves the right to publish articles in an electronic format (e.g., on the Internet, on CD, or any other forms of publication) by itself or by an authorized third party.
  • Manuscripts should be composed in Chinese or English in the following manner:
    1. Original articles should be composed in the following order: Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgment, References, and Summary (in Chinese or English).
    2. Case reports should be composed in the following order: Abstract, Introduction, Case Report, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgment, References, and Summary (in Chinese or English).
    3. No specific format is required for review articles and brief communications.
    4. Letters to the editor: Any party who would like to offer suggestions regarding the perspectives of a specific paper published by the journal should mail a signed letter to the editorial board of the academy within two months of publication. The letter should be limited to 1,000 words or fewer, containing no more than two figures or tables, and references should be limited to five or fewer. Senders should specify their identity in the letter, including name, telephone number, and the full name and address of their institutional affiliation. The editorial board of the academy reserves the right to forward the letter to the related authors and publish this content with the authors’ comments or clarification regarding their academic perspectives.
  • Manuscripts should be composed in the following page order (page numbering should begin on the first page of the manuscript):
    First page: This page should contain only the title, the full names of all authors, complete titles of the authors’ institutional affiliations, a running title in 20 Chinese characters or 40 English characters or fewer, and the name, the institutional affiliation title and address (in both Chinese and English), and telephone or fax number of the correspondence author, who is the contact person. For English titles and running titles, the first letter of each word should be capitalized, except for prepositions, articles, and conjunctions. In the case of multiple authors from more than one institutional affiliation, specify the order of the authors (aside from the first author) by using superscript numerals on the right of the author names. An example is provided below in both English and Chinese:

    Second page: This page should consist of an abstract with no more than five key words (in Chinese or English). English key words should be in lowercase.
    Third page and after: This portion should consist of the main text, acknowledgments, references, tables, figures, legends, and a summary written in either English or Chinese.
    Chinese papers should include a 400-600 word summary in English, and English papers should include a 300-500 word summary in Chinese. Summaries should incorporate the title, the full names of all authors, the complete title of the institutional affiliations of the authors, the abstract, and key words.
  • Both Chinese and English manuscripts should be typed on A4-sized paper horizontally from left to right. All descriptions in English papers, including information presented in tables, figures, and legends, should be double spaced. All margins should be at least 2.5 cm. Chinese papers should use Chinese punctuation, and all English text, including nouns and corresponding English text in parentheses, should be in lowercase, with the exception of proper nouns. For Chinese papers, figure descriptions should be in Chinese, and for English papers, figure descriptions should be in English.
    1. Tables: Each table should be printed on a separate page and accompanied by a short caption. English captions should be in lowercase except for proper nouns and the first letter of the sentence. No lines should be included in the tables.
    2. Figures: Three copies of each original figure should be provided, with each copy in a separate envelope. Similar to photographs, figures should have clear contrast and be printed on glossy paper. On the back of each figure, the figure order and caption should be specified with a pencil or using labels. The figure orientation should also be indicated on the back using arrows. Photographic film should be provided when necessary for platemaking. Black-and-white figures should be illustrated in black ink on white paper; the original copy of the figure should be provided as well. The magnification rate or scale unit should be specified for optical or electron microscopy images. Legends should be typed on a separate page.
    3. Numbers should be in Arabic numerals. Units of measurement should be described using the International System of Units, for instance, cm, mm, mm, L, dL, mL, kg, g, mg, mg, mmHg, kcal, 37 °C, msec, mm3, and ％. Molecular mass should be described in mol.
    4. Terminology: Abbreviations and acronyms should be specified in full text followed by the abbreviation or acronym in parentheses the first time they appear in the manuscript, for example, spinal cord injury (SCI).
  • References should be organized in the order of citation in the manuscript, and should not exceed 30. For review papers, references should be organized in alphabetical order by first author, and the number of references is unlimited. References should not originate from online sources. Each in-text citation should be followed by an Arabic numeral in square brackets. Abbreviations of journal names should be in compliance with the Index Medicus. In-text citations of references with three or fewer authors should list all names of the authors. In-text citations of references with four or more authors should list the names of the first three authors followed by “et al”. Examples of references are provided below.

    3. Book chapter: [Author of the specific chapter]. [Chapter name]. [Editor]. [Book title]. [Edition]. [Place of issue]: [Publishing company]; [Year of publication]. [Page of citation].
      e.g. Bryce TN, Ragnarsson KT, Stein AB, et al. Spinal cord injury. In: Braddom RL, editor. Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. 4th ed., Philadelphia: Elsevier; 2011. p. 1293-346.
  • Authors are required to send three manuscripts (one original draft and two drafts with author and affiliation information removed). Authors are to independently submit their English manuscripts or English summaries of Chinese manuscripts to academic English editing bodies for revision, and attach a receipt or statement as proof.
  • After the manuscripts have passed the review process, authors should provide a copy of the manuscript on CD. The journal committee will issue a proof of acceptance to authors after format adjustment procedures have been completed. The correspondence author is responsible for proofreading the printed samples. No content modifications should be made during the proofreading process. The publishing order is based on the order of acceptance.
